Mesa Verde Area Vacation - See Ancient Ruins, Learn the History of The Puebloan People, Unplug to Reconnect with the People You Love

Our McElmo Canyon Homestead built in 1911 once served as one of the original postal pickups for the area. CANYON TRAILS RANCH: Guided Horse Rides, Campground and Shepherd Wagon Glamping is between Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and backs up to the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument in Southwest, Colorado. Our family has lived here for over 40 years! The property has hosted camping and outdoor educational groups since 1965. We are a family run farmstead with an operating hay farm, horseback riding business, RV and tent campground, shepherd wagon glamping rentals, and a carriage shop. Join us for your authentic Western Colorado vacation as you explore the Four Corners region, full of ancient Indian ruins and remote open red-rock canyons.

Imagine the perfect experience . . . in the morning you see ancient Puebloan ruins while riding a horse on our guided trail rides or hike Sand Canyon Trail on your own, then enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting at the local vineyard 1 mile away, and in the evening come back to our Ranch to enjoy seclusion under dark, starry skies.

WESTERN ADVENTURES on GUIDED BACKCOUNTRY TRAIL RIDES

CANYON TRAILS RANCH has horses for all levels of rider abilities. Our backcountry horse rides offer you the opportunity to visit ancient sites in the spectacular McElmo Canyon in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. You'll see many ruins, learn the history, and enjoy the beauty of the red-rock formations by horseback.

HALF-DAY TRAIL RIDES: Spend three hours riding with the Canyon Trails' wranglers through the adjacent red-rock canyons of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Your guide will lead you to see many of the ruins left by the ancestral Puebloan people that lived here a thousand years ago (formerly known as the Anasazi). You will have the opportunity to get off your horses and visit these sites up close and personal.

FULL-DAY TRAIL RIDES: The Full-Day Ride lasts for about six hours and goes by some of the same sites as the Half-Day Ride, and much more. This ride is meant for those who want to spend an entire day enjoying horses, the Southwest scenery and exploring some of the pristine BLM backcountry. Sack lunch included.

RESERVATION INFORMATION: Canyon Trails Ranch requires a minimum of 2 riders per ride, with a maximum of six. Trips are not tailored to children under 8 years old, or anyone with a fear of horses.

Our tent sites are simple sites and Our RV sites are water and electric.

SHEPHERD WAGON GLAMPING: We have two glamping wagons the Rancher Wagon and the Pioneer Wagon. Our shepherd camp wagons are cute and unique. The Pioneer wagon is an authentic antique wagon from the early 1900s on modern running gear and The Rancher wagon is a modern build on traditional running gear. They each have a full size bed that sleeps two with a pull out table and built in seat benches. They have Dutch doors and windows open to provide airflow and natural light. Inside outlets are provided for basic charging needs. A private, outside sitting area is next to each wagon to enjoy sunrises and sunsets.
