Leadville: A visit to historic Leadville is a true trip back in time.

Once the mining hub of Colorado, the town has remained perfectly preserved thanks to its designation as a National Historic Landmark District. More than 70 square blocks of Victorian architecture remain along with a 20 square mile historic mining district.

Visitors to Leadville can stop at the historic Tabor Opera House and the Tabor Grand Hotel, built by legendary mining magnate Horace Tabor and his wife Baby Doe. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum gives the back story on the silver boom that created the town, and vacationers can visit the Climax, once the largest molybdenum mine in the world.

The Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railway still takes passengers up into the mountains for scenic rides, following the same routes trains used decades ago to bring famous visitors such as Doc Holliday and Oscar Wilde. And a trip along the Top Of the Rockies Scenic Byway, a 76-mile route with Leadville as its hub, will offer even more breathtaking sites.

Visitors to Leadville can enjoy a day of downhill skiing at Ski Cooper in the San Isabel National Forest.

Twin Lakes: If historic Leadville is still not enough, a short trip about 23 miles southwest of town takes travelers to Twin Lakes village.

Located next to Colorado's two largest glacial lakes, the town began as a stop on the route between the mining districts of Leadville and Aspen. In the late 1880s, however, mining magnate James V. Dexter built the nearby Interlaken Resort, a 100-acre complex featuring a dance pavilion, stables and servants' quarters. Soon after, the area became a haven for wealthy tourists who boated in the summer and skied in the winter. It remained popular until the 1950s, when enlargement of the lakes cut off access to the resort.

Today, the town of Twin Lakes as well as the Interlaken have been carefully preserved for visitors. The Interlaken was designated a National Historic Site in 1974 and is undergoing extensive restoration work. And Twin Lakes village, at the base of Mt. Elbert - Colorado's highest 14er - has remained almost the same, with many of its classic log cabins still standing.
