San Juan Backcountry was established in the 1990's. San Juan is one of the oldest touring Company's in Colorado. The San Juan area around Silverton, Colorado is America's most pristine wilderness!

We are excited to offer guided tours of the majestic San Juan Backcountry. Whether you choose an ATV, 4x4, dirt bike or snowmobile in winter, our backcountry guides will safely lead you through spectacular scenery and show you Colorado's history.

Please Note New Law: No one under 13 is permitted on an ATV.


From 9,318 feet in Silverton, to over 13,000 feet! That's where we take you in the comfort of our open-topped suburbans. Let our professional drivers treat you to a day of spectacular scenery and history all rolled into one.

4x4 Guided Tour Prices

Full Day Tour: Adult $150; Child (12 & under) $90 (included lunch)

4 Hour Custom Tour: Adult $80; Child (12 & under) $45

2 Hour Tour: Adult $60; Child (12 & under) $40

There are over 700 miles of Jeep trails! As you drive, you will be traveling over old wagon roads and seeing ghost towns, mines, wildflowers and waterfalls.

The most popular routes are the Alpine Loop and the Ophir-Imogene Loop. We have maps. There are many routes to take and we will be happy to suggest the best options based on what you want to see and where you want to go.

Choose between hard and soft top; and, between automatic and stick shift. Our vehicles are inspected after every rental.

RENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Drivers must be 25 years old and have a valid driver's license and show proof of full coverage insurance. A credit card in the drivers name is required.

Rubicon Jeep Rental Rates 2016

Half-Day 2-door Jeeps: $150 Per Half Day + 11% Tax

Full Day 2-door Jeeps: $200 Per Day + 11% Tax

Half-Day 4-door Jeeps: $200 per Half Day + 11% Tax

Full Day 4-door Jeeps: $250 Per Day + 11% Tax

Pick up time: 8am; Return time: 5pm

Jeeps must be returned with a full tank of gas or there will be an additional charge.


San Juan Backcountry offers both Guided ATV Tours and unguided ATV Rental. If you enjoy the outdoors, this is a great adventure!

Enjoy riding your own All-Terrain Vehicle while exploring the mines, ghost towns, smelling the wildflowers and taking in all the beauty around you, such as waterfalls and wildlife. Our customers come away loving the San Juan Backcountry and come back year after year.

Include with your ATV Tour or Rental are a helmet with face shield or goggles, full tank of gas, instructions & safety tips for your ATV, and ATV drop off/pickup at the trail of your choice.

Requirements: To operate an ATV you must be at least 16 years old with a driver's license. One rider per ATV.

ATV Tour Prices 2016

Half Day ATV Guided Tours: 8am - 12pm OR 1 pm - 5 pm: $130 (single rider)

Full Day ATV Guided Tours: 9am - 5pm: $280 (two riders)

Full Day 2-Seater Buggy/UTV Tour: 9am-5pm: $300

ATV Rental Rates 2016

2-hour ATV Rental: $100 (single rider)

Half Day ATV Rental: 8am - 12pm; or 1pm - 5pm: $130 (single rider)

Half Day 2-Seater Buggy/UTV Rental: 8am - 12pm; or 1pm - 5pm: $200

Full Day ATV Rental 8am - 5pm: $180 (single rider)

10% Discount with rental of 4 or more ATVs. All rental rates are subject to change without notice.


The 4x4 tour is in an open top Suburban which allows you to stand up and take wonderful pictures along the way.

4x4 Full Day Tour with Free Lunch: 9am - 5pm: Adults (12+): $150: Children (12 & under): $90.

The ATV tour allows you to do the driving.

ATV Lunch Tour: 11am - 2pm: $160 Single rider; $50 additional passenger


Rent a Dirt Bike and enjoy the backcountry in a way you never have before! Make sure you bring a jacket because it can get cold in the upper elevations. Bring your riding gear, we rent Goggles for $5.

Requirements to rent: Must have Motorcycle License with Insurance.

Full Day Rental: 8am - 5pm: $195

Half Day Rental: 8am - 12pm; or 1pm - 5pm: $150
