An advertisement in the New York Tribune in 1869 solicited people to establish a "colony" in the West. . . . A year later, the Union Colonists established Greeley, Colorado and named it for their hero, Horace Greeley. At first, this town had a hard time due to arguing between colonists over policies and practices, but now this city is the county seat for one of the leading agricultural counties in the nation. Near the meeting place of the Cache La Poudre and South Platte Rivers, cattle and crops have been the moving forces behind the economy since the 1870s. Today Greeley is also home to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) Bears and the Kenneth W. Montford School of Business. UNC is Colorado's top teacher's college. Also known for one of the nation's largest outdoor rodeos, the PCRA; The Greeley Stampede is in the top 10 rodeos according to purse size. It was a Top Five finalist for the "2000 Large Outdoor Rodeo Committee of the Year" award.

Greeley is a great stop for the history enthusiast. In 1975, the City of Greeley reserved land next to Island Grove Park for an 'outdoor museum' to interpret the settlement history of Weld County from 1860 to 1920. It depicts architecture and lifestyle of the early settler with 32 buildings on 5-1/2 acres. The Centennial Village Museum, named in honor of the nation's bicentennial and the state's centennial, opened on July 4, 1976. Centennial Village is the site of many festivals and special events, summer classes for children, and tours.

The Greeley Blues Festival is a family oriented day usually in mid-June. The BlueSkool stage features educational workshops teaching music techniques to all ages and children's activities are offered. There are two stages inside the arena, providing continuous music from open to close. The interior of the arena is grassy for a relaxed atmosphere. Lawn chairs, blankets and bottled water are welcome, but please leave your coolers at home.
