Layers of shale, sedimentary rock and red slickrock sandstone, holding countless dinosaur bones, dominate Grand Junction. From rusty oranges to brilliant reds, colors light up the terrain. Or try 4-wheel driving at the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range, 8 miles north of town. The Unaweep/Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway, a 138-mile route, begins just outside of Grand Junction. It follows the course of Unaweep Canyon, through the vivid red desert of the Dolores River Canyon, opening up on the high plains. Opportunities to discover nature in Grand Junction are endless. Today, the mainstay of the community can be found in the acres of apricots, cherries, grapes and peaches sold around the country. Discover one of Colorado's best kept secrets: wineries. In nearby Palisade are five vineyards with tasting rooms and winery tours. Be sure and visit the newly opened Devil's Canyon Science and Learning Center in Fruita where you can go back in time to when dinosaurs roamed. Also nearby is one of Colorado's beautiful Rifle Falls, located just a few miles west of I-70 in Rifle, Colorado.
