Capital Prize Gold Mine Tours

Scenic Byways and Drives Activities, Tourist Attractions

The Capital Prize is an active mine, and visitors will see a modern prospecting operation that includes dredges, sluice boxes, classifiers, and shaker tables.

Fun for the whole family! Visitors to this authentic underground 1800s gold mine will walk over 1,000 feet, the longest walking tour in Colorado, into the mountain. See mining tunnels, gold veins, machinery, and tools. Walk into a stope, a dugout tunnel, and experience what it was like to work by candlelight.

The Griffith brothers started mining in Clear Creek County in 1867. The bothers discovered the Aetna vein, which produced a "mother load" of gold and silver at 3,200 feet digging down from Silver Plume Mountain.

The mine has produced millions of dollars of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper over the years, and unlike most Colorado mines, the Capital Prize was never abandoned. This continued operation preserved the mine site, its equipment, and the original blacksmith shop.

Visitors will learn about drilling, blasting, and mucking and the importance of mining in the Wild West.

Instead of gold-panning, visitors "mine" an ore specimen from the stope, and we break them open to see the gold and silver.

The mine is a constant 50 degrees, so it's warm in the winter and a great place to cool off in the summer.
