Colorado Springs Area Map
Catch the excitement of Pikes Peak purple mountain majesty and see why Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write "America the Beautiful" when she stood on the mountains overlooking Colorado Springs. From a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the dramatic 14,110' summit, to the sunny charm of an afternoon hike through an alpine forest near Manitou Springs, the Colorado Springs area offers a myriad of activities. Visit the out-of-this-world natural red rock formations of the Garden of the Gods or tour the U.S. Air Force Academy. Explore Old Colorado City, the original site of Colorado Springs, where restored 1800's architecture made it a registered National Historic District. First open in 1880, the Cave of the Winds is the oldest attraction in the area with easy walking tours for families or, for the more adventuresome, tour crawling on your belly and see parts of the cave system in their natural state. Fish for Rocky Mountain trout and enjoy the fresh, pine-scented air of this high-country region.
One of the most famous towns in this area is Cripple Creek, nestled in an extinct volcano crater riddled with gold fields in a remote region on the backside of Pikes Peak. The town and its surroundings eventually produced $600 million in gold. Cripple Creek's limited stakes casino gambling offer the opportunity to strike it rich. Lake George was founded in 1887 a few miles from the dam at the mouth of Eleven Mile Canyon. Six miles east, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument was once a raging volcanic field whose lava and ash preserved insects, leaves and fish. Numerous fossils were discovered in 1874 - the monument was established in 1969, encompassing ancient Lake Florissant which existed some 38 million years ago. At the nearby 7,000-acre Dome Rock State Wildlife Area, see Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, deer, elk, bobcats, coyotes, eagles and wild turkeys. The fishing is truly excellent on Tarryall Creek and Reservoir, and at Eleven Mile and Spinney Reservoirs, all near Lake George.
